Q1:How long have you been in the "scene" here in LA?
I’ve been going out to underground shows in LA since the day I moved to SoCal in 2001. My first brush with house in LA was places like Release on Wednesday’s, More and Free Thinking on Fridays and of course Deep on Sundays. I would also end up at Love and Happiness from time to time. It wasn’t until about 2002 that I decided to do my own event (Gravy) with original partners Joe Rodriguez and Josh Grondie. So I guess its been about 8 years.

Q2: In your opinion, what's LA's 'edge' in the clubbing scene compared with other US cities like Miami, Detroit, New York?
Honeslty.. in the "clubbing scene" LA has zero edge. The clubs here are built as pop/hip hop/celebrity-oriented venues. Not for vibin’, cultured dance music freaks, like in Berlin, London, Ibiza, etc. If LA has an edge, it’s in our beautiful underground scene. And… that edge is continuously sharpened, but more importantly “used” on a weekly basis. It takes a very dedicated group of obessed individuals to hold this baby up.

Q3: When was your first DJ experience & who was playing?
My first DJ experience was an underground event called “Dream Garden” with special guest Mark Farina. Joe Rodriguez and a few other of my homies hosted the second room. I was really nervous and played pretty awful. Luckily my friends where all there to help keep me up and work through it. The party was epic! I was really lucky to be on the bill. |
Q4: If given the chance, what artists would you like to work/play with?
Work and play are definitely 2 different things.. so I’ll start with work. I’d soak up every milisecond if I could just be in a studio session with Prince to see how his creative process works. But If we’re talking about more underground dance music types I’d have to go with Dj Koze. He continuously blows me away with blurring the lines between beautiful/relivant/life music, and dance music with huge guerilla mutant balls. Now who would I like to play with… I’d like to play with Doc Martin or maybe Francois K.. For me, it’s not just about how great of a DJ they might be techincally, it’s also about working the crowd together to make a great night of music. |
Q5: What projects are you currently working on?
Right now, I’m moving my studio to my new place in Silverlake. I have a grip of unfinsihed tracks that I want to complete when I get situated. Other then that, I’m of course pushing my weekly “Lies Lies Lies” with partner Jorge Medina as well as our one off underground series “Animal Club." I do all the artwork for flyers etc so I stay pretty busy. We’re just over a year with our weekly! |
Q6: Who are some of your influential artists?
Even though I have a bunch of underground/dance music faves like Koze, Harvey, Carl Craig, Marc Houle, and DOP. My biggest influences would have to be Prince, Pink Floyd, MJ, Giorgio Moroder, and even The RZA from Wu. |
Q7: What are your 'top 5' electronic music tracks of all time?
1. Donna Summer (Moroder) “I Feel Love”
2. MJ “Billie Jean”
3. Eddy Grant “Time Warp”
4. Prince “Erotic City” (Live version w/ Parliament)
5. Agoria “Les Beaux ours Featuring N Zeng” [ Different ]. |
Q8: What was the last record/track/album you bought?
Last Track: SoundStream (SoundHack) “Let’s Break” [ SoundStream ]
Last Record: Lauhaus “Casamance” [ Remote Area ]
Last Album: Snoop Dog “Doggystyle” [ Death Rzow ]. |
