Get to know Derek Michael better
Q1:How long have you been in the "scene" here in LA?
I have been in the "scene" since I first got here; 5 years ago. I'm from A city called Windsor, which is a Canadian city that boarders Detroit, MI. I have been making and playing electronic dance music since the early 90s.
|
Q2: In your opinion, what's LA's 'edge' in the clubbing scene compared with other US cities like Miami, Detroit, New York?
LA aint got shit on Detroit. But compared to the other places I have lived in or visited, LA is ROCKING. LA's Edge lies in its environment. A huge population, diverse ethnic background, media based economy and tech-savy culture. There are also Lots of drugs, big speakers, and warehouse spaces to keep people happy. Sky's the limit, its LA!
|
Q3: When was your first DJ experience & who was playing?
geez.... maybe 1993, in the basement of a strip club in Windsor, i was 17 or so.
I opened for a Detroit legend BT Basher, DJ GodFather and Fat Albert. Probably the same records we still playing now.
Windsor had a lot of early techno culture sparking in those days, hence the Richie Hawtin, John Aquviva, Ian Hind, Magada, Kero, Marc Houle etc. |
Q4: If given the chance, what artists would you like to work/play with?
good ones. (at least lock a f*#^&*g beat or do something that's not boring or predictable). |
Q5: What projects are you currently working on?
Currently working on some things with DJ Baseck under the project name [D]Squared. Mostly a live improvise show, but we're going to record as well, I don't record much....Im always playing shows here in there, mostly in LA. I help out with alot of events, I do the artwork, flyers and design stuff for DROID, as well as help out at events with general ascetic, installations and the like. Im putting a couple events together for the Detroit Music Festival aswell, every year we do the Substance and Friendly Integration parties there.
In LA, every few months i try to do some future dance music events aswell under the name Friendly Integration, or "FI". So far those events have housed, Modeslector, Apparatt, Jimmy Edgar, CLP, Jachoozi, Oliver Hacke, Robert Kosh, DJ Kero, Dadelus, Baseck, The punisher, K.atou, Ianhind and bla bla bla. I'll be also planning a small euro tour this summer.
Outside music, i do some design stuff, ride my long board around Silverlake, have BBQs, and kick it on the Wii. |
